The fall 1994 collection from Todd Oldham featured a bevy of supermodels and gorgeous gowns - one of which was this amazingly beautiful beaded dress. As far as I am aware only two of these were made - the one that walked down the runway on Karen Mulder and that was donated by Todd Oldham to The Met (pictured below and the runway video from the 1994 show is also included) and this one that was custom made for the Ebony Fashion Fair. It represents a remarkable time in fashion history and I feel was one of the pinnacle gowns of the show. I have reached out to Mr. Oldham for some insider information on the gown and when I hear back will post that on our blog
The gown itself is absolutely wonderful - a long and lean column of solid bead work on a graduating colored silk that is cut to follow and highlight your every curve. The gown itself is cut with a simple and masterful hand which allows that amazing bead work to take center stage. Two types of beads are used and the combination of the two create an exotic "leopard" print that travels over the surface of the gown. This strong design is softened by the use of that soft baby blue. The neckline and back are scooped and the waist nips in just a touch. It is super model length with a trained back. The entire thing is covered with beads making the gown very heavy but once on, it falls and balances out for a sensual fit and feels amazing once on. Inside it is completely finished in a silvered white silk satin silk so literally slides over the skin. When you move all of that bead work captures the light magnificently. Presents as excellent condition.
Fully lined in a cream silk satin and closes with a back zipper. It appears to be entirely done by hand. The gown is very heavy and there is a slight amount of beads loose or missing along the straps - probably from improper storage and it being hung with its full weight from a hanger but there is no major damage. There are beads and loose threads along the train - again from storage and being walked down the runway. Inside the upper bust and along the hem the satin has scuffs and discolorations - nothing that shows when in. This would have been worn exclusively on the runway and these small flaws are a result. All that being said when on the gown presents as excellent and it is priced accordingly.
