In 1947 Christian Dior’s “New Look”, recalling the historic styles of the mid 19th century, offered tight cinched waists, billowing skirts, and a pronounced bust line; setting the tone for the next decade.
Clothing styles during the war years had featured dull colors, squared shoulders, and a minimal use of fabric and embellishments due to wartime restrictions. Dior’s New Look offered a new opulence and a new look at femininity. Fifties Fashion epitomized glorious elegance and the simple pleasure of feeling beautiful. Fashion was celebrated. Haute Couture, in particular, flourished after the imposition of the war.
This beautiful “stand-out-from-the-crowd” dress is a wonderful example of the style of the 1950’s. The bodice an eye-catching yellow rayon is cut elegantly, with simple lines. The intricate layer of olive green organdy with it's trompe l'oeil basket weave pattern over the slim skirt perfectly epitomizes the opulence and beauty of the era. A great “unknown” to add to a very special wardrobe !
