He had been born in Ravenna, Italy, and studied law before turning to couture as a designer for the Italian house of Fabiani, Carmel Snow, editor of Harper's Bazaar, discovered his work at the 1951 Pitti Palace show and recommended him to Elizabeth Arden, who was looking for a new couturier for her fashion salon.
